I Saw Them

I saw them in this small town by the sea
Walking down the streets, going to movies,
Looking for a vacant phone
to call their loved ones back home.

I saw them in the Wal-Mart
going down the list of things they needed,
some looking for cds,
while others laughed into the cameras on display.

I saw them with their families,
moms, dads, son, daughters,
brothers, sisters, trying to etch their faces to memory

I saw them at the gates as they searched my car
how they chuckle at my bumper sticker
and politely said "Yes, that's us Ma'am,"

I saw them eating dinner,
Teasing,
laughing, and trying to pass the time.

I saw them on the beaches,
soaking in the rays
listening quietly to the calming sound of the waves.

I saw them in the busses going down the freeway,
some trying to catch a few quick winks,
some seriously looking out the window, their thoughts already so faraway

I saw them in the morning, such young looking faces,
standing so tall and proud
as they manned the rails of the 7 grey ships,
Some throwing last minute kisses to those of us below.

I saw them pass Loma Point; our flag was clearly flown,
we waved one last goodbye.

I saw them, as they are, men and women
with a great love and commitment in their hearts
to serve their country and their fellow man.

I saw them ... the few, the proud, the United States Marines.

I saw them for what they are ... HEROS!
